It is played over 2000 years ago, the modern version of the sport was developed in British India in the mid-19th century by British military officers stationed in Pune (then known as Poona), giving rise to the sport’s early name, “Poona.” The game was brought back to England, where it was formalized at Badminton House, hence its modern name.
